Introducing Meta Verified

Meta Verified is a subscription bundle introduced in 2023 by Meta (Facebook) to help you establish your presence on Instagram and Facebook. It was announced by Mark Zuckerberg in 2023, and widely seen as another way for Meta to grow its revenue like Twitter from subscriptions.

Eligibility For Meta Verified

Only individual profiles are eligible for Meta Verified at this time. Business accounts are not eligible for Meta Verified. Access to Meta Verified benefits may be disabled or cancelled at any time if your account violates Meta’s Terms of Service or Community Standards.

Your Facebook profile must meet these minimum eligibility requirements:
  • Be a public or private profile, associated with your full name, that aligns with our name standards and a profile picture that includes your face and matches your government-issued ID.
  • Your account must meet minimum activity requirements, such as prior posting history.
  • Have two-factor authentication enabled.
  • The account has to meet our Terms of Service and Community Standards.
Note: At this time, Meta Verified only supports your real name on your profile. Once your profile has been verified, you can’t change the username, profile name, date of birth or photo on your profile without going through the Meta Verified subscription and verification process again.

For Instagram, eligibility criteria is similar here.

As such, people who are considering getting Meta Verified should be sure that they are not changing their names or profile names, which is especially important for content creators and public figures.

Differences between Verified Pages and Meta Verified

You might get a little confused by the differences between the two (and don’t worry, so did we at first glance).

These are, at the time of publication, different concepts but it seems likely that over time they will be merged into a single concept. Basically, Meta Verified is available to anyone who pays whereas Verified Pages used to be free and exclusive to public figures.

Verified Pages/Badges

The verified badge means that Facebook has confirmed that the Page or profile is the authentic presence of the individual, public figure or brand that it represents. Previously, the verified badge also required the person or brand to be notable and unique. You will still see users with a verified badge that represents Meta’s previous eligibility requirements.

Meta Verified – Verify your profile or Page

If you are not a public figure, celebrity or brand, you can now subscribe to Meta Verified to receive a verified badge for your profile – subject to the eligibility criteria set out above.

You can also apply for the verified badge for a profile or Page if you are a public figure, celebrity or brand and meet certain account and eligibility requirements outlined below. You can fill in this form to verify your profile or Page.

Meta Verified For Pages?

Note: Meta Verified is available to verify profiles only, not Pages. Notable Pages can still apply for a verified badge. As we test and learn, there will be no immediate changes to accounts on Instagram or Facebook that are already verified based on prior requirements.

Requirements to apply for a verified badge (free)

For accounts not subscribed to Meta Verified, Meta look at a number of factors when evaluating Facebook Pages and profiles to determine if they’re in the public interest and meet its verification criteria.
In addition to following Meta’s terms of service and the Facebook Community Standards, Pages and profiles need to be:
  • Authentic: Represent a real person, registered business or entity.
  • Unique: Be the only presence of this person or business. Only one Page or profile per person or business may be verified, with exceptions for language-specific Pages and profiles. We don’t verify general interest Pages and profiles (e.g. puppy memes).
  • Complete: Have an about section, Page or profile photo and recent activity, including at least one post.
  • Notable: Represent a well-known, often searched person, brand or entity. We review Pages and profiles that are featured in multiple news sources and we don’t consider paid or promotional content as sources for review.
If your Page or profile doesn’t meet the criteria for a verified badge, there are other ways to let people know it’s authentic.

For example, you can link to it from an official website, Instagram profile or Twitter account. You can also subscribe to Meta Verified to get a verified badge for your profile.

Costs Of Meta Verified And Payment Methods

Costs

Meta Verified is a subscription service that costs US$11.99 per month on the web and US$14.99 per month on mobile devices.

Note: To use Meta Verified on both Instagram and Facebook, you must subscribe on each app separately.

Renewal and Payments

Meta Verified payments are charged on a monthly basis and automatically renew every month, unless you cancel at least 24 hours before your next payment date. You can request to cancel your Meta Verified subscription at any time.

Your Meta Verified subscription will be charged to the payment method currently connected to your Facebook account. You will automatically be charged every month from your initial payment date, until you’ve cancelled your Meta Verified subscription. For example, if you purchased a subscription on 24 January, you will be charged again on 24 February, 24 March and so on.

Future of Meta Verified

As mentioned, we expect that anyone who wishes to get verified will have to “pay to play” and would likely include businesses. Given Facebook and Instagram’s presence in businesses and the need for businesses to be active on Facebook and Instagram, we would expect and encourage businesses to sign up once it’s available. This provides greater trust and security to consumers, especially if the uptake is good for businesses (we expect it to be), and leaving those who fail to sign up as outliers.

This can clearly be seen by Meta saying that “long term, we want to build a subscription offering that’s valuable to everyone, including creators, businesses and our community at large. As part of this vision, we are evolving the meaning of verified accounts on our apps so we can expand access to verification and more people can trust the accounts they interact with are authentic.”
